Without a shadow of a doubt, the cap is now one of the most democratic, accessible and famous fashion accessories in the history of clothing, far transcending its original function of mere protection from the sun's rays.
.
At Maudlin Merchandise we're well aware of this importance, and it's one of the areas we pay the most attention to, since it turns out to be one of the items we sell most regularly, so the offer when it comes to stamping caps had to be more than plenty, don't you agree?
From snapback caps to mesh caps, better known as trucker caps, promotional caps, children's caps, ecological caps made from organic cotton and recycled polyester, or caps in high-visibility materials, the diversity is immense!
.
But when and where did the cap originate? Let's help clarify!
According to historical records, the first protective head accessories appeared around 4,000 BC in Greece, Babylon and Ancient Egypt, when headbands were used to protect and at the same time secure the hair.
A little later, accessories such as crowns, turbans and tiaras appeared and were worn by warriors, nobles and priests as a symbol of professional and social status, remaining so to this day.
.
The first hat to be worn in human history was called Pétaso, around the year two thousand BC. Its main distinguishing features were its wide brims and low crown, which the Greeks wore while travelling as a form of protection. It was a type of adjustable hat that was very practical and could be removed easily, and its use lasted throughout the Middle Ages in Europe.
Around the year 1,000 in Ancient Rome, slaves were forbidden to wear hats, but as a curiosity, when they were freed, they wore a kind of cone-shaped cap with a drooping tip, which symbolised freedom.
.
This same model would later be reused during the French Revolution, which took place at the end of the 17th century, being called the "Bonnet Rouge" and eventually becoming a true symbol of the Republican Party.
Not far removed from today's models, the cap in "buds" or "stitched parts" began to be used by a British butcher around 1800 and was catapulted into the limelight through sport, particularly baseball.
.
In 1889, Albert G. Spalding, a famous American baseball player, produced a book with instructions for players of the sport, in which photographs of himself wearing caps predominated. As it was a highly popular sport in the United States, the "fever" for the tight-fitting, wide-brimmed cap would break out among young people, even though at the time it was initially produced in a rustic material, namely straw!
The large-scale manufacture of caps didn't take off until after the Second World War, with leather, vinyl, velour and PVC being the most popular materials for production purposes.
.
What models of caps are available today?
We're talking about a fairly recent type of cap, whose distinctive feature that makes all the difference is the so-called "back" plastic strap that allows the ideal adjustment to the size of each person. This model is very popular in the skateboarding world, not only because of its functionality, but also because of its style.
.
2) Strapback cap
Instead of snapback capThe strapback has a different way of adjusting and instead of a plastic garment, a metal buckle is usually used, which allows for an even more precise fit, making it a real hit with young people, surfers and allowing it to be perfectly combined with printed looks.
.
3) Mesh caps(Trucker)
It is undoubtedly one of the main trends, and its main feature has to do with the fact that its rear screen is perforated and ideal for total ventilation of the scalp.
It's a classic that has been revisited in a post-modern guise by countless celebrities, such as Neymar, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, who have naturally helped to promote and publicise it.
.
4) Straight-brimmed cap
It is well known for being an integral and indispensable part of the wardrobe of countless footballers, singers, skaters and others. It appeals to both male and female audiences and is widely used by brands, as it allows for marvellous prints.
.
5) Curved-brimmed cap
The so-called "curved brim" is a more classic style of cap that continues to be used in baseball today, as it offers greater protection at eye level and allows athletes to run at high speed. It's a model that's also a trend, as it's undoubtedly a "must have" for those who like to be fashionable.
